NutriGuard's DHA Concentrate is a potent source of the long-chain omega-3 fats, EPA and DHA, that are believed to mediate many of the health benefits associated with regular fish consumption. Special purification procedures insure that this product is essentially free of toxic heavy metals and fat-soluble xenobiotic compounds. Based on an updated analysis of the research literature, NutriGuard Research has decided to switch its fish oil product from an EPA-dominant form to an oil that maximizes DHA content. This new product will now have the name DHA Concentrate; 2 caps will feature 550 mg DHA and 200 mg EPA. Recommended intake will be 2-3 caps twice daily with meals. The capsules are made by the same high-quality supplier (Ocean Nutrition, recently purchased by DSM) that made our EPA Concentrate caps, and features DHA and EPA in triglyceride form, the natural way to ingest oil. Careful extraction procedures ensure that this oil is essentially free of heavy metals and xenobiotic contaminants such as PCBs.
DHA is the form of omega-3 that plays a structural and functional role in the brain and retina.1, 2 And, from the standpoint of vascular protection, accumulating research suggests that DHA may be superior to EPA in this regard.3-7 Also, DHA appears to be largely responsible for the favorable impact of regular fish consumption on the lungs of smokers.8 Relatively recent research indicates that DHA can give rise to a family of anti-inflammatory hormone-like factors known as resolvins that aid in the resolution of inflammation.9 Also, there is now evidence that DHA in tissues can effectively act as an antioxidant; when peroxidized by oxidative stress, DHA gives rise to a compound known as 4-hydroxyhexenal that induces our cells to make a range of antioxidant enzymes and boost their production of the important antioxidant glutathione.10, 11
A further advantage of supplementating with DHA specifically is that, whereas dietary intake of the plant-derived forms of omega-3, alpha-linolenic acid or (the rarer but more effective) stearidonic acid, can boost blood levels of EPA a bit, very little impact on tissue DHA levels is seen.12 So, to get the benefits of DHA, it is best to get this directly either from the diet or from supplements
